So, it was more of a fifty-fifty kind of day,” Raphael says.

“Actually, it was more ninety percent good, ten percent so-so. An unspoken undercurrent has always been pulling Mom and me apart. I wish I knew why that is, but I don’t think I’ll ever find out. Usually, I go with the flow, bobbing and weaving. If I put up a fight against Mom’s undertow every time, I couldn’t enjoy the good that’s all around me.”

Good. That’s what Raphael has been, treating me with nothing but kindness and patience. I wish I could say the same. “Raphael, I apologize for the way I spoke to you earlier. I still don’t want to get into what set me off, but you didn’t deserve my hissy fit.”

“No sweat. You have a lot on your plate,” he says with more than trace of empathy. “At least your dad and you have a great connection,” he adds, undoubtedly his gallant way of changing the subject.

“We do. I guess that’s why, wittingly or unwittingly, Mom has a knack for embarrassing both of us. The upcoming memory is a case in point.”
